ive just got a normal ide hd in my 5000, its an ibm 7200 rpm 60 gig (i think). no worries so far

This is probably the quitest drive out there, you won't even notice it's there. As opposed to 3.5" drives which are too damn loud. As an added bonus, being a laptop drive, it will auto-sleep.

1. Laptop drives don't auto-sleep on their own. The OS and/or system BIOS controls that.

2. Not all 3.5" drives are loud. I have a Seagate Barracuda IV 40GB in my E4XT Ultra and you can't even tell it's on. I have three Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 series drives in my studio machine and they are whisper-quiet as well.

3. Laptop drives are much more expensive than regular desktop drives and not worth the extra money in this case - you don't need to save power or space, etc.

If you stop writing in such big letters I might answer your question, that is if I actually knew something about harddrives for the ultra series, which I don't.

I didnt know my fontsize was so relevant to the context.
I was just making it more readable as this fontsize is too small for ppl with bad vision.
anyway maybe somebody else might be more helpful and informative.
Furthermore dude if your typing smartarse/insulting stuff your only wasting your own time not mine.
Lots of other ppl here might have the same question so the quest continues....................................

Do some shopping around. You will find that this is no longer the case. Both the aforementioned drives can be had for around $60. US.

Reasons?...

Cheap at around $60.

Quietest drive available-virtually silent. Some of us prefer to hear our music.

This is an important one: The Fujitsu has extremely low power consumption: 0.90A maximum at spinup, an thats for the 40gb dual platter version. 20gb single platter version is probably a little more than half of that.
Remember any drive pulling more than 1.7amps at spinup will eventually fry your Ultra's power supply. This means any 3.5" 5400rpm drive containing more than one platter, or any 3.5" 7200rpm drive is out of the question. Check the power requirements of any drive you are considering.

If you will be running EOS 4.7, you could go with the 40gb version of this drive. Keep in mind though, if you prefer to avoid the EOS "loud outburst" bug and as a result are running EOS 4.6 or earlier, the Ultra will only support up to 20gb, so the 20gb version is perfect.

Trust me, stay away from 3.5" drives, they are shite for use in an Ultra.

Hi everyone,

I bought the Fujitsu MHT2040AT drive for my E4XT Ultra and StarTech mounting bracket.

I'm not sure what's happening but its not working properly so I will investigate.

The first issue I found with the drive was trying to format it to FAT32 in Windows XP. The formatting application would only allow me to format as NTFS file format. I had to download an use Swissarmyknife for the formatting.

When fitting into the E-MU, the bracket didn't fit properly without drilling in two holes and expanding two already drilled in the bracket, then the E-MU only recognises th drive as DB Fujitsu MHS2040AT. Whereas the PC recognises the drive as MHT2040AT in Windows and on the Mac. The drive won't let me save big folders too it and frequently, I get the message - SCSI communication error.

Does anyone have any ideas about what I need to do to the drive to make it work. Currently, the drive has no jumpers inserted. Maybe I need to do something here.

I agree Art, from what I've seen - if this works - it will be great. there is pretty much zero noise.

I Have a Quantum fireball and it works like a charm. $6 on ebay plus a few bucks to ship

I have a 4 gig but you can find em bigger... I use the external SCSI for all the big storage so it's portable... and just keep mostly E-MU factory plus nuts n bolts stuff like drums n 808s and basic stuff I use regularly like breaks on the internal plus keep a backup of the bank I'm working on at the time on the internal.

It turns out that I was shipped the wrong drive. A letter out makes all the difference. Interestingly, I bought a 60 gig MHT2060AH which worked without any issues and these drive was cheaper on ebay (though higher db during operation).

Just to add to Hallifax,

I agree about the quantum drives. I had a 15 gig quantum in my E50000 Ultra and it was brilliant. Not once did I have any issues. My experiences with the 4 gig drives have also been very good. Incredibly sturdy and simple to install.

I ended up mounting the startek bracket through 4 silicon connecters. I also tried another bracket from ebay which also didn't fit. Maybe I got unlucky twice but its worth noting for anyone wishing to use a laptop drive. I'd recommend getting a small drill piece, the size of a screw needed for mounting a hard drive, and then added two extra holes into the bracket. Maybe even four new holes would be the best solution.
