To clarify - I've secured my fan to the outside of the power supply cover, blowing air into the the power supply through the "grill" of holes that exist in the psu cover side alongside the rom and ram slots in my e5000 and then I 've masked the remaining holes ie air from the main space of the sampler is forced into the space under the psu cover. My concern about this method was the psu cover looks like the ideal resonant form with it's thin metal and large area, but thankfully it doesn't seem to add up to a loud volume. I'm relying on pressure within the psu cover to exhaust the hot air rather than blowing air in the direction of the rear exhaust apeture. I'm not sure which method would be the most effective but I know at least as much air comes out now as did with the 40mm fan. I'll post images when I can.

Looking at your images Andy the grill I've fitted the fan to is the one in the bottom left hand corner of your motherboard photo next to the sticker that says no servicable parts or "Keep Out High Voltage"

That sounds genius. Have you decided on a model of Zalman fan like FB165 (80mm), ZM-F1(80mm) or maybe an alternative 60mm fan. Also, do you know if the old power supply unit could handle it?

I'm very impressed. I'd be very interested in viewing the photos at some point in the future.

Looking for low wattage fan. I'm not sure on the Zalman (zm f1 and FB165 are the same fan but fb has a bracket (Fan Bracket 165 ?)) as I think the wattage may be deceptive as the actual fan is 3 watts and the lower rating (0.63w) is with the resistor but I dont think that includes the resistor wattage which I think I recall is calculated by resistance x current x current i.e. in this case 56 x 0.125 x 0.125 = 0.875w to add to the 0.63w, not so cool. I'm looking at other options including the silenx with a resistor... Quite why the slower (9db and 11db) Silenxs dont consume less power is a little frustrating

I wouldn't worry about the wattage of the new fan, this is just marginal, it's not like you're adding an extra harddrive and a RFX board , it's just a fan.

Have look my post on page 1 where I included the link to my "hush my Emu" project, there you'll see that there's no need to have the PSU cover. If you mount the fan like I did, it will blow air over the PSU components and the hole of the original will still exhaust air.

Having tested all three approaches I can't see a significant benefit to the 80mm fan so I'm going for the simplicity of the silenx 40mm.

I've just changed the fan on my E4XT Ultra. That was a ba***rd. The E5000 ultra job and Classic was easy but getting the cover out and back in again in the E4XT was very tricky. The word clock board was in the way and it was a pain to say the least.

It was also difficult to get the bottom left silicon mount through the external hole into the fan since the word clock was in the way.

I then plugged in the E-MU, used the wrong power cable (same kettle type but untested since I changed the heads from european cables) and the E-MU didn't start!

What a shocker.

I then used a different cable and it all worked except the display was one shade darker.

After my heart settled down, I ran the diagnostic check from the disk - did an EPROM reset and now its running beautifully again. I've run a full diagnostics. I'm making sure the sampler is tip tip. Looking job.

Phew!!!

I'm guessing the dodgy power cable was the culprit. I've looked at everything else inside and all looks good. Not only that - it was a clean job. Although tricky - I was very careful getting that cover into position.

Maybe i'm tired.

If you're working on the E4XT Ultra. Take your time and be patient.

You need that fan to cool the motherboard and the hard drive, not just the power supply. I wouldn't get rid of it.

I have only ONE fan inside of the power supply. Some people here report that they have a bigger one inside for cooling. But my E6400 has only one which I want to exchange with a silenx fan. Hopefully much quieter.

I just change my e6400 classic fan which was really noisy for the silenX Evilandy mount in his sampler

I can't compare, really really low noise , less than my laptop. Nice.

Also, anyone bought it from the UK?

I bought a 40mm fan from Silenpc.com for my E4X sometime ago but it was actually more noisy than the EMU one! (Actually, it was also thiner so I guess it was running more quickly...)

My Esynth's fan, a Sunon, was the noisiest I'd ever heard so I changed that to a Papst a. However, that wasn't much of an improvement, so a couple of months ago I changed it for a SilenX 40 mm.

The difference was noticably quieter, but still not as much as I'd hoped for.
