e6400 = Lights on but no one home.

Any problems with your Ultra sampler should be reported here, hopefully someone might know what's wrong.

Yeah not a problem, it has to be pretty much an identical machine though. The flash holds your operating system, which is identical on all Ultras.

Your problem sounds a bit different to mine, my machine was booting up with all the lights on, a big block on the display and no backlight. It was not scanning the floppy drive on startup, so I could not reload the os.

You may have a problem with the cpu ram, check the following thread.

viewtopic.php?t=654&highlight=cpu+flash

I would try replacing the cpu ram, if that doesn't work then try reloading the os, leave the flashprep as a last resort.

Flashprep is only required to update if your current os is below 4.5 on Ultras, not sure about Classics. If you are having problems getting it onto a floppy, then download it from http://www.emu.com/support/legacy.asp and follow the instructions given carefully. You run the file and it asks you to select a destination for the image which is usually drive:a (your floppy drive).

I just got mine fixed, cost me ?150, they put a new flash in and decided to test my hard drive and outputs which I knew were working. ?40 for a new flash and ?110 labour, not happy!

If you are in the UK or US there are a load of links in my post above for service centres, in case you can't fix it yourself.

light's on...

Postby nitrochrome » Tue Aug 15, 2006 7:51 pm

Hi

yea I tryed that. Took the HD out and turned it on again, but still the same thing. Reseated the RAM and tryed it again, same thing.

I think its lost the OS, so I'm going to go look for another machine in my area so I can reformat the flashprep disk to put flashprep on the disk from my PC, but I'm wondering how the PC will read a EMU format floppy.

Does that sound logical?

Okay sorry, I should have read the thread before I posted:

I'll try that DL first. If I get the flashprep on the disk, it might be ok.

light on...

Postby nitrochrome » Tue Aug 15, 2006 8:20 pm

Hi again

well it looks ok to DL the EOS to the PC and then it should format the floppy from the PC as long as I can find 2mg of that ram somewhere. They are the short old SIMM style ram sticks on the board on top?

say if the EMU just says e6400 on the front, that means its just a classic?
not an Ultra?

I'm just wondering how much of an upgrade I can do with this one. I have a paper manual that says it has a 16 track sequencer, but the manual from the sit says it's 48 tracks.

Yeah mate just make sure you format the floppy on the pc before you run the file.

Couldn't tell you where the flash is on a Classic, you'll have to ask someone else.

Yes, if it just says E6400 on the front then it is a classic.

I don't know if you are aware but you need 2mb of flash before you can install Eos V.4 and above, it will seriously screw your machine if you don't have it. If you're not sure then I would install Eos version 2.8 and check after installation how much cpu flash you have. To check goto Master>Utilities>About>Config and it will tell you exactly what is installed.

If your machine is scanning the floppy on startup then you should in theory be able to reload the os.

If nothing works theres someone on ebay selling cpu flash for E6400 Classics. I think a few of the guys off of here have bought from this bloke and everything was okay.

Okay that's the other kind. Let me get this straight, there's two kinds of memory stick on there. The one on the front right is the flash, that's 72 pin dimm, and the ones on the top board are the old smaller simm kind, there are four slots, two for ram and two for rom.

The 72 pin is the one for the OS?

The one's on the deck, maybe thats the 32 megs onboard?

The odd thing is I have another 72 pin sitting here, but it's 128 megs!

I think the old simms were a drag, I will try replacing all of them first.

ALSO should I stick in the flashprep and put the OS on a separate disk, does the OS need the flashprep to run first? Then it prompts you for the OS when its ready?

I got the FP on the floppy last night but it still doesn't make a difference.
It is scanning the flash and the floppy back and forth so it must be a memory problem. does that sound right?

That lights on but not boot on Ultras...

Postby vermis_rex » Thu Aug 17, 2006 2:18 am

I was wandering around... I think it was on Tweakheadz site (but I can't find the article right now), there was mention of how to install an IDE hard drive without the kit. It mentioned that if the unit powered up with just front panel lights but no boot, it was probably that the IDE cable was connected the wrong way around (swap end-for-end).

If I can find the article again, I'll post the link...

--later that same night--

HA! Found it... http://www.basscadets.co.uk/emu/faq.htm

Second line from the bottom of the article sounds just like your symptoms.

Hope this helps (or sorry if it didn't)

hi,
today i received my emu e6400ultra with the rfx32 and 128mb ram. i bought it pretty cheap because of one little problem:
before you can use it, you have to switch it on, wait 10 minutes, switch it off, and then switch it on, again. otherwise the screen doesn't show anything, and all leds are on.
today i used the sampler for about 12 hours ( :slayer:  ) without any problems, when it suddenly crashed as i wanted to use the rfx board.

this is how the screen looked like:
Image

does anybody know if this is one of the 4.7 bugs or if it is a hardware-problem?
i think i`ll try to install 4.61 and take out the ram/rfx tomorrow..
