E4K ROM expansion sockets

Postby gcoudert » Tue Jan 09, 2007 8:49 pm

This might sound like a really stupid question, but what are the two ROM expansion sockets inside the E4K for?

ROM cards, I know! But which ones?

Thanks,

Gilles

There were two 16MB sound ROMs: E-Synth (which came standard in, strangely enough, the E-Synth), Orbit/Phatt (which featured sounds and presets from the Orbit 9090 and Planet Phatt modules). There might have been others that I haven't heard of... there seem to be two versions of each: an early one with only about 250 presets, and later version with 500 presets.

I believe the Proteus 2000 ROMs also work, although I haven't got around to trying them yet (only had the ROMs a week, been too lazy to pull the e6400U out of the rack and swap them over from the PX-7).

You can use all kind of different flashcards for the Proteus 2k series (and all it's spinoffs), but you've gotta build your on presets. If you use two sound roms you can't use any ram.

I thought it was just if there's ANY sound ROM installed, you were limited to max 64MB of sampler RAM.

You mean you lose access to 64MB per ROM? With two installed you can't sampler anything at all?

This is correct. When sound ROMs are enabled in system setup, you can only access 64MB of sample RAM. The other 64MB of addressing space is used to access the sound ROMs.
