Just picked up a 6400 Ultra for extremely cheap. I spent a few hours with it last night and I'm loving this thing already. I've worked a lot with software samplers and I can't say how refreshing it is to finally have a sampler that considers *sampling* to be one of its primary functions. The auto multisampling stuff is brilliant.

I do have a couple of problems though:

1. the rotary dial is so jumpy that it's unusable. I've read through the fix suggested here but I think I might actually need to replace the whole dial because it's not just a little jumpy - it barely works at all. Where can I find a replacement part?

2. I don't have access to a PC with a floppy drive so I have no way of upgrading this machine from 4.1 to 4.6/4.7. Is anybody out there willing to mail me a set of upgrade floppies? I'm in the U.S. and I'd be happy to reimburse you for your time & trouble.

3. The hard disk in this thing is *loud*. From searching the forum it sounds like the Seagate IDE drives are very quiet and work well. I can't find the 18 gig models anywhere though. Any pointers.

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm really looking forward to getting to know this thing better. I loaded a couple of Kontakt drum kits in last night and was impressed at how much presence and punch they had coming out of the E-Mu.

1. You could consider buying a keyboard and attach it to your emu, then you don't need the wheel. I'm not sure wheter the 6400ultra need an upgrade to use a ascii-keyboard. Regarding the fix I'l leave that to other users.

3. Ebay is you best go here, I'm afraid.

Looks like my 6400 doesn't have the keyboard port. Is this an expensive/hard to find expansion? It's not clear to me from the manual how the keyboard replaces the data wheel. Can I use the keyboard to edit filter cutoff, for example?

My rotary wheel can be jumpy too and needs recalibrating regularly. Try doing it slowly (24 clicks in all).

I didn't even see the recalibration feature in the manual. Thanks! I'll try this tonight. There doesn't seem to be anything physically wrong with the knob at all. The whole machine seems to be in very good shape except for a little dust. I can't believe I only paid $220 US for this thing. Almost half the price of a Kontakt 2 license!

You're in the US, right? If you havent had a result by the weekend give me a shout and I'll post some out on Monday, but hopefully someone a little closer to you will be able to help out before then.

Just a thought, but do you have a friend or works PC that you could use for five minutes? It'll save the wait.

I work in IT and I'm surrounded by thousands of computers but none of them have floppy drives any more.

Unfortunately recalibrating the rotary wheel didn't help. I guess I'll have to replace it. Hopefully EPR electronics has a spare.

then you can use your pc keyboard over midi

I just ordered a replacement encoder and the OS floppies from EPR electronics in Florida. Doesn't look like replacing the encoder should be that difficult.

It seems as if it is a Bourns encoder which can be replaced,
but it can be difficult to open the front plate.
