getting to grips with it and things are flooding back to memory from yesteryear, one thing thats bugging me though. WHen i create a new sample and then go to 'place' it, lets say i span it over 2 octaves ie C0 - C2 and set the original key to C1. This all maps well and good while in sample manage screen. But as soon as I flick to preset manage it is shifted up by a few octaves, So i keep having to adjust my midi controller?

is this normal?

I have no idea if that is normal... Must be though because, well, software doesn't break like an actual object...

But, the dirty little secret here is... I don't "place" samples. I do it from the multi screen... you know.. the screen that loads up that show all your presets and such. I page up to the next screen and set the voices to the range I want. It's pretty cool... You can set the range... the low... the high... and origin by hight lighting the parameter and pressing the key you want on your controller.

To me... it just seems faster... Oh... and I don't have issues with things changing like you say going this route... even though.. as I sit here... I think I remember what you are talking about which is probably why I stop placing samples.... but who knows... that was in the 1800's....

cheers, yeh I actually stopped using place, it is shit and is only overridden by the multi screen anyway. No probs now with each page being set to diff octaves.

Software doesnt break persay but dodgy memory, flash, mobos and all manner of other things can have an impact on how the software runs, was just worried that it might be a dodgy bird id bought.

The only other thing I find a bit odd is the envelopes they certainly dont seem to behave like regular ADSR for me, I prolly just need to play with it a bit more.

Yeah... the ADSR's seem to be odd. It seems that there are stages that are listed but they don't seem to do anything. It's like there are six stages but if you set one a certain way, like the second decay... the first release overrides that second decay... It just doesn't seem to act right.

Oh... and I don't know if you remember this...but becareful with the ADSR... if you set it up "wrong" you can actually get an increasing swelling of sound that goes on forever and gets louder and loudeR and loudER and louDER and loUDER and lOUDER and LOUDER anD LOUDER aND LOUDER AND LOUDER...

Then you have to turn your mixer off... and kill the bird for a moment... nasty little thing that does.

Yes... it's times like those that you need a MIDI "all notes off" within easy reach (luckily, since I'm controlling my e6400 from an E-mu PX-7 command module sitting on top of the rolling floor rack, "all notes off" is just a two-button-combo away). Pity the e4 series samplers don't have a simple front panel button combo for "all notes off".

(on an almost completely unrelated side note... I've also got a Casio VZ-10M, which has both a "MIDI clear" button right on the front panel, and weird 8-stage envelopes, where any stage can be set to sustain or end... which frequently makes me wish that everyone included flexible envelopes like these... if you want simple ADSR, you can use just the first four stages, or get really freaky with the full eight)

I hadn't realised the first release overrides the second decay on the E-mu...although it almost makes sense: note-off just jumps from whatever stage you're at in the envelope to the release stage (now if only the EOS included the Morpheus style function generators).

The sample button(6400 ultra) was my poormans panic button.
