hi, im a noob here, but not to electronics. nice to be here and read things for myself. i havent owned much emu gear in the past but ive read all kinds of good things about it, so i figured id jump in big, but especially now that prices have dropped. and boy did i luck out... this thing is pristine and has everything. you should see her backside! ive never owned a top of the line anything haha! time to let my drum and bass fantasies fly! as soon as i figure it out, that is. im still buying that scsi dvd-ram and cables for smdi... i gather this is a pleasure to use when its hooked up properly.



ive owned ensoniq gear in the past, and to tell you the truth, i wish they were still around because i found their systems very deep and extremely versatile. their filters were creamy delish too and i bought a dp2 just so i could keep the ensoniq effects around. i love their sound. im geeked!

i just got a roland re-201 space echo for less than $400. that makes up for my overpriced sampler haha

considering each of the expansions. I think that price was more than fair.

im sitting here not knowing how to use it tho. haha that manual looks intimidating! i envision an easy way to pump phrases to it from the computer over smdi and then use all those glorious adat inputs and outputs with my korg oasys pci and m-audio lightbridge... ooooh its gonna be fun!





what does anyone think of creamware cards? id like to hear some stuff from one... hmm i think ill google it.

he is actually making a mod to the ram and rom size, and writing a whole new os with many new capabilities built in... its quite impressive! pictured below is a prototype daughterboard similar to one you will be able to buy soon around december of this year.

here is an audio input with a knob for noise/input mix... im so geeked!

Lol, an EX-800

I borrowed mkII for about 3 years and loved it to bits, but I never had any special mods.

I also borrowed a Sequential 6-track of the same guy however he took them back and sold the 2 bits of kit for ?250 - the year was 1996 and I was a skint musician, gutted now. Look after your Korg!

I can't even work out if this is going off topic or not. Oh and I also had the privilege of using one of those Korg Polys with the inverted colours on the keys - like below ...

yeah man an ex-800! im getting another one just now on ebay. guess the OS mod for it will include cascading even or odd midi notes so you can combine 2 for more poly... i cant wait to try unison mode with detune. im so go ahead on these mods because this thing can be had for cheap and they do sound cool if you tweak the jello out of them... im checkin out mods to tweak the bucket brigade delay chip inside next!

but the next project is an old AWE32 soundcard and a PIII system with a dos tracker called 'ast' (at this link). btw, ast is compatible with wav files.:

the card is basically an eIII sampler engine with an FM chip and a talking chip, the rest of the card is a soundblaster 16... its 13 inches long! this is the oldschool jungle way!

upon more research, you can even use an AWE64 gold card which has a much better signal to noise ratio, and even has a 20bit spdif output! hows that for future proof?

yeah up to 28MB ram for wav files... not quite a samplecell card but similar. this was after creative had acquired e-mu systems, inc., incorporating its wavetable technology into its sound card line.

as it turns out, the only mod worth doing was the audio input on the korg EX-800... the rest sounded not as cool as i thought.

ive also learned that the Gravis Ultrasound card is very much the oldschool sample playback engine, possibly used in oldschool jungle production, but definitely a staple of the early mod scene, which jungle grew out of im sure.

i got the AWE32 card installed in my PIII 500MHZ machine! im still waiting on memory chips, but i have my joystick to midi adapter, and im ready to go! before long ill have an oldschool box worthy of droolage...

looks like theres an easy way to add up to 28MB (using a 32MB chip) sample ram to an AWE64 gold, which is the newest of the AWE cards... HERE



i am impressed with the tightness of the sequences when using AST. i can see how budget musicians made this thing work for them! true its nothing special by todays standards, but i think limitations make you get creative...

case in point, i think this (AWE32/AWE64) is a popular platform in mashup particularly. (example)

plus this thing is compatible with WAV files! and if its not enough for you, you can program your MIDI synth/sampler from it too!

i spent total less than $100 on this whole idea, including the computer.

if youre a fan of the sampling sound of the late 80s/90s, this method has that sound. the filter is pretty good, and the effects are base, but they can be done.

just let me run this thing out of the 20bit spdif into my E4 platinum, where i can pump it through some filters and use its dac stage... or even pump it to my korg oasys over lightpipe where there are some real effects. woah. what the hell, why not back into the E4 and then into the DAW? MUAHAHAHAHAHAAA!
