Hi all,

After owning an ESI-32 back in the day and also making heavy use of my mate's E6400 I, like many, went the software route with EXS24 and Mach 5 et al. However these are just sample playback programs and I soon missed the warmth of the ESI low pass and the flexibility of the EOS filters.. So the other day I managed to get an E64 with internal drive (model 6401) for ?33! Yes, 3 and 3! Shocking. It was a touch tatty with stickers on but after a soapy cloth and some TLC it shines like a champ!

Anyway, enough of my life story. My questions are what can I do with the E64? I've opened it up and the internal drive is a 240mb SCSI Apple branded drive. I didn't check the flash ram but I guess it's 1mb and the OS is at 3.0. It's also got 40mb in. So -

1 - What external SCSI CD drives does the E64 like? I've heard the more American and fruity the better...

2 - What brand internal SCSI HDDs are best for it? Can it do 9.1 or 18.2gb?

3 - As 50pin internals seem to be thin on the ground, is it ok with 80 to 50 pin adaptors (and isn't there some reverse polarity power issue?)

4 - What kind of 'bandwidth' SCSI HDDs will it take (Ultra 1, Ultra 160, Ultra 3, etc)??

5 - If I don't use an internal HDD, can I substitute that for an internal SCSI Zip?

6 - Can I go any higher than 3.0 without upgrading the CPU flash?

7 - Would it make any difference to the size of drive it can address if it were external?

8 - Is there anything I've missed to do with it (I'm not into the Synth Roms and 40mb seems ok for the moment memory wise)??

Didn't the E64 have a max 64Mb ram limit? Ive not had any experience with the E64. That was the E5000 of its day.
Still is a great sampler though.

I found that 3 to 4 Gb internal scsi drives of all kinds work fine in my E4 and have never had any problems with any Ive had in it.
Not really had any issues with any brand od SCSI CD drives, but then Ive only used mine with drives mounted in the PC not in an external box.

Anybody need a cheap external SCSI CD drive? Its nothing flash, has a caddy and comes with the SCSI cable. never really needed it as I do most of my work with recycle. ?20 plus postage?

I've just ordered an IBM SCSI drive and a 80 to 50 pin converter - that should work hopefully. I'll leave the ram as it is as I know it can do 64 but I'm not faffing with old SIMMS and 40mb is plenty.

I'll keep an eye out for a SCSI CD then, I'm wary of Yamaha but Apple, Plextor and others should be ok?

Why yamaha, Ive been using an old 24 8 2 yam drive for over 12 years with no problems at all. Ive got a couple of spares too.

Oh it's just I've read people (non ultra people) have has issues. It seemed that for the older units (E4/E64) they were happier with US manufactured drives, certainly according to the SOS review.

After owning the E4 since 96/7 ish Ive never heard of that.

Seriously, my E4 has been conected to approximately 20 pc systems in that time, all running a SCSI connection and some sort of transfer software and Ive never had a problem in that time, other than dodgy laser lens. Oh yeah and the revision of the adaptec 2904 cards has given me problems. Ive got two amost identical, one built in mexico and one in china with the same chipset. The mexican card will not see the EMU at a software level but it does in the SCSI bios. Never solved the problem, just bought another card and hey presto.....

Point being, I wouldn't get too hung up over spec's and this and that.
Ive always use secondhand SCSI bits as they tend to be quite expensive. Just get a cheap set up that works and get rocking.

If it breaks buy it again cheap.
Ive never needed the extra storage that the card readers give but hey thats me. If theres too much data on the drive, theres not enough memory to open it all.

The solution, buy another cheap Emu.

Yeah, got it cheap as so wanna keep it cheap as. 9.1gb drive, cd rom, keyboard. That'll do, it's mighty as it is and with chickensys i'll get some good stuff on there. Not gonna faff with computer interfacing as I have a Macbook and frankly it's not needed for that.
