IDE hard drive, used to work fine, now works intermittently

Postby paul2600 » Mon Oct 02, 2006 9:05 am

Hi, has anyone else notcied this problem?

About 2 years ago, I installed a Maxtor 40 Gig IDE hard drive into my E6400 Ultra, with the standard IDE installation kit. Worked fine for a long time, but recently the drive has stopped appearing in the browser window.

My first check was to open the unit, reconnect all cables. This worked, the drive appeared again, but the next time I turned it off it had dissapeared.

This seems to happen consistently, once you disconnect and reconnect all cables the drive will work. But once you turn it off again it dissapears.

Not sure what to try next, different IDE cable? new power supply? different hard drive?

Anyone with any similar experiences out there?
Cheers.

Sounds like the drive might be going. Could be a bad connection but when my drive strated to act weird I replaced it and it worked fine. Maxtor Drive's are actually not so great, if you don't mind spending the money get a Seagate, they seem to last alot longer....

Can you recommend a good model of Seagate drive? I can't seem to find one that meets the power restrictions.

I took the hard drive out, and noticed the jumper was set to 'cable select'.

I changed it to master, and all has been working fine again for about 2 weeks. Don't know if it was set to this when I purchased the drive, or if I did it by mistake during trouble shooting.

Perhaps it was just loose cables, because it seems to have been a simple fix in the end.

Thankfully no clicking sounds. I've been there before with maxtor drives.
