There are probably sevral places that sells this kind of stuff, in norway we are having quiet many PC webshops selling it. dont know if they ship abroad, but i cant imagine that there are no stores like that in england. SACON2535 is the partnumber on the unit i showed you.

one other thing.. after replacing my old 3,5" 40gb ide harddrive with the new laptop drive. my screen arnt dimming everything the harddrive are working.. which was the case before.. (and one of the reason i wanted to change the harddrive).

So it was obviously pulling more power then the drive i use today.

I have been searching for a 2.5 hardrive around derbyshire and nottinghamshire but I cannot find any, where did you get your drive from??

I bought two off of ebay for 35 and 40 bucks. I got slugged for the adaptors though. Gonna install them this weekend. Thanks for the heads up. My E5000 always struggles to keep the LCD lit. This should help.

Did you need - separate from the 2.5 to 3.5 IDE adapter cable described above - to purchase/make a second 4 pin molex to 4 pin fdd power cable? as other people suggest on this site (lord toranaga)

If not, I assume the molex 4 pin plug that protrudes from the IDE adaptor cable you describe supplied power to the disk?

I'm finding it hard to locate an fdd to hd style power cable, let alone modding one. It would be good if you only need the 2.5 to 3.5 IDE adaptor with a built in power connection. I wonder if it's possible to run the disk without using the motherboard power connection?

with that product, no extra cabling is needed. The power is plugged into the adapter with the all ready existing pwr plug that are in the emu.

So to summarize, just to be clear:

You aren't attaching *anything* but the single IDE ribbon 44 pin cable to the EMU motherboard - this is the SACON2535.

The 44 pin IDE output on the motherboard appears to be providing power to the 2.5" drive via a 4 pin molex from the SACON2535.

There is nothing attached to the small 4 pin IDE fdd style power slot on the motherboard (it has IDE power written on the board next to it).

I'm asking because perhaps your sampler came with the 6303 IDE Kit - this includes a HD molex to fdd style power cable - and you haven't realized it's an accessory other users don't have. Basically you seem to be saying that you can use a SACON2535 (or similar readily available product) in lieu of the now unavailable Kit without modding/splicing cables. That's great news.

I just ordered a hardrive power supply for my 3.5 until I find a 2.5 hardrive local to Derbyshire or Notts.

I got the required adaptors from Harvey Norman. They were 20 bucks each. Its actually a card adaptor you plug into the drive, then you plug the normal ribbon and power supply to it. To be honest I haven't installed it yet, but I'm fairly sure I wont have issues.

The part number at Hardly Normals is :

I got it from the PC maintenance section as its not a shelf item.

Please do let me know if the adaptor supplies power to the drive off the 44 pin IDE cable. Harvey Norman is easy; splicing cables is hard.

The are US 99 cents on ebay, shipping about $5 to US, probably not too much more to Australia since they are in California. They shipped lightning fast in my case - 1 day to Boston, US.

They ship to Australia from their description, and the brackets are also handy so that you can make the drive fit to the EMU's 3.5" installation bracket.

And yes, since in 2.5" drives, power comes into the unit via the interface (not by a separate connector), most of these adapters that take the Molex socket for 5/12V power will route it to the 44 pin 2.5" IDE header.

Not bad for 99 cents, and the aussie $ is pretty strong right now, so not bad after conversion either.

I finally got around to installing them. No problems they worked fine.

I've tried the 2.5 IDE disk with a similar 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor - the disk isn't picking it up.

Hey Om, you mentioned you bought two adaptors - what's the purchase code for the power supply one? Did you need to switch the molex cables? Or just plug and play?

What did you ask Harvey Norman for when you bought it?

I simply explained that I wanted an adaptor from a regular 3.5 ide harddisk cable connection to a 2.5 laptop hard drive. It was just plug and play with nothing else required.
