E-synth internal HD, communication & file type

Postby Synthesizer » Sat Nov 15, 2008 11:15 pm

Hi guys!
I've almost bought an e-synth (non ultra), but when i went to get it, the seller told me that the internal HD was not waking up (ZZZ...)
It seems that the HD died...
Then he added he has no CD drive for it...
(The board has the latest OP, he said)

My questions:
-Do you advice me buying it anyway?
-What kind of HD should i get? ANY SCSI 50 pin HD? (please HELP in here!! I'm not in USA so if u tell me a part number/serial code, etc. it's not helpful!) 7200rpm? Size limit? Anything else?
-If i want to edit the samples in my comp: is it a drama to transfer them to the comp? are they .WAV files? Can somehow be .WAV files?!! Can I use an IOMEGA ZIP/JAZ DRIVE (scsi)? Something easier?

I guess that's it...
Just don't want to go back 10 years ago with smth i haven't paid for yet...!

Thank you VERY much!!!

I use an external scsi iomega zip drive with no problem. The latest OS is 4.62 I believe.
As for receiving/transferring Wav samples to Wavelab or whatever, I use an AES/Digital interface via my soundcard to the PC. But, you can still use midi. A little slower, though.

Regarding the hard drive, I too was looking at this, but haven't come up with a workable solution yet. I attempted to connect an ultrawide scsi drive I had spare but it wasn't seen by the E Synth.
Also, make sure the drive doesn't require too much power from the motherboard.
I've seen another thread here that goes into further detail.

Hi Grenham,
Thanks a lot for ur answer.

Is it possible to transfer WAV thru midi cable? (I think Sound Forge does it), not as a file, but as audio. Also, I think another option is buying a SCSI card to put in the computer & tranfer thru cable. In that case: is it possible to transfer from computer to E-Synth & the way back too (from E-Synth to comp)?

That's better than converting the file type & all this things, right?

But Grenham, I have a doubt: You have no HD, so u use your ZIP cartridges instead of it? Or what?

So in a few words, possible full configurations may be:
-internal / external HD + MIDI cable
-internal / external HD + SCSI card (& cable)
-IOMEGA ZIP + MIDI cable / SCSI card (& cable)

right? With any of this I can perfectly work?
Any SCSI card with a 50pin connector is ok, right?

THANKS A LOT!

Yes, it's perfectly possible to transfer wav's over midi. In Wavelab you have a generic smdi or specific model Emu scsi settings.
It all depends on what your host (Wavelab, Sound Forge etc) will allow you. And, your midi interface, of course.

Zips are fine for loading or saving your samples too, as is most removeable media.

Regarding the Scsi connections I don't transfer that way because I use the AES/Digital interface via an Emu 1616m.
And, as I said, I didn't have any joy with my 9gb ultra wide drive so I can't help you there.
At the very least though, it'll work through midi.

hope this helps

Thank you very much Grenham, that was really helpful!

I got some info about HD: Quantum Fireball 6GB (50 PIN) seems to work, so I'll try to find one.

Good luck, hope you can solve it too!
