Anyone know the max size of external drive I can connect to my E4 platinum via scsi?

I have read that I can use upto 137GB if formated in fat 32 , but I am unsure if this only applies to internal IDE drives.

If I can use a large scsi drive like this I will buy a internal drive and scsi enclosure on ebay and connect via a cable and save myself the worry of poking around inside this machine, as it is so maxed out with optional cards and running so smoothly I would rather not tamper, but the internal 20GB drive is getting so full.

Anyone out there able to help?

SCSI discs over 137GB are rather expensive (new around 300 EUR = 420 USD) and probably not that easy to find.
It might be easier to find multiple smaller discs.

So am I correct to assume from your comments that I can use any size external scsi drive ( upto 137 GB) and my ultra will read it?

There is a diffrent between recognizing and reading.
The limiting is refered by the Fat or/and the EOS but not by the SCSI at the E4XT ( or Platinum ).
...so, you can plug there also Terabyte Hardisks ...and the E-MU will recognizing this , maybe it displayed also in the Disk-Menu ...but you can never use all this space. ( completly ).

Thanks for your reply, but the manual or wiki do not answer my original question.
Im sure that there are other users out there who would be interested in connecting a large external scsi hard drive to the ultra samplers
So can I use an external scsi drive ( upto 137 GB) and succesfuly read it with my ultra? I Will be formating it in FAT and am running eos4.7
Anyone out there that has done this who could shed some light on this topic?

From ebay I have just bought ....
1 - a external centronics scsi enclosure
2 - a 68 pin 36GB drive
3 - a 68 pin to 50 pin internal adapter.
I will put them together when they arrive and test it out.
I'm hoping for a good result.

don´t work with Adapters 68 pin to 50 pin . There are also Cabels with direkt 68 pin to 50 pin. A trap less

Manifaktur does not matter....just keep care of the lenght. Maybe between 40 - 65 cm.... not longer and not shorter.

Do I need to consider 9LNT [9 Line Negation (High Byte) Termination] with a drive size over 4.5GB ?
Or will the E-mu work with the drive without this?
Does this have anything to do with the trap you are refering to?
If so will this converter currently on ebay work ....

I need a storage drive for my E4K (because my internal HD got some bad clusters) and as it's hard to find 50pin drive with low spin up amperage (less than 1.7amps/12volt) I consider buying SCSI 68pin drive (up to 9 GB, as EOS 3.0 and less can handle them) and connecting it to external enslosure (68-pin or centronics) and connecting it through 50-to-68 cable, or using an adapter inside the enclosure. Do you know if this may work?

If you stay under 4.5gb there should be no problem using an external drive even if it is a 68pin with an adapter.

An affordable solution that i have tried and found to work well is an Iomega Jazz drive. These come as 1GB and 2GB drive sizes, as they use removable discs like zips( but 10x more memory) the max size of your library is unlimited. You can often find the more common 1GB drives on ebay for between 10-25 UK pounds. I can recommend these as the discs are more easy to come by than the 2GB model.

My problem is that i wanted to use a larger drive and step it down to 50pin, but even though it should work in theory with the right adapter, finding a reliable one is proving to be dificult.
I have one large external 68pin drive that has the correct adapter and sits inside a centronics enclosure and this works great, however I have yet to build a working one myself. Every atempt I have tried has failed. I have used 4 different 68pin drives ranging in capacity and tried 2 adapters (including The one I bought from ebay paying 20 pounds UK because this one had High bit ternimation) but I still had no luck.
A converter WILL do the job as one of the drives has proved but it has got me stumped.
Anyway I can work with the 40gb of drives that I have, and as I have the external drives formated in FAT I am able to back them up on my PC freeing up space should need arise.

GOOD LUCK WITH THE MURKY WORLD OF SCSI

Personally, I'd stay far, far away from Jaz drives. One disk going bad ruins the reader, which then ruins every disk that's inserted into the drive. I learned the hard way back in the 90s.
