Analogue Synth Patches With Tweakable Continuous Control

Postby JAHFUNK » Mon Jun 06, 2011 1:55 pm

This is a soundbank made using a set of Sawtooth multi-samples taken from the Sequential circuits Pro One.
Image
The bank is designed to take advantage of the continuous controller features of the Ultra series.
The controllers have been assigned as follows....

Controller A - White Noise (0 = Max Volume - 127 = Off)
Controller B - Filter Freq (0 = Off – 127 = Full)
Controller C - Filter Res (0 = Off – 127 = Full)
Controller D – Chorus Amount (0 = Off – 127 = Full)
Controller E - Filter Envelope Attack (0 = Fast – 127 = Slow)
Controller F - Filter Envelope Decay (0 = Fast – 127 = Slow)
Controller G - Filter Envelope Release (0 = Fast – 127 = Slow)
Controller H – Detune Amount (0 = Non – 127 = High)
Controller I - Amp Envelope Attack (0 = Fast – 127 = Slow)
Controller J - Amp Envelope Decay (0 = Fast – 127 = Slow)
Controller K- Amp Envelope Release (0 = Fast – 127 = Slow)
Controller L – Sub Oscillator Level (0 = Max Volume – 127 = Off)

Information on Presets

P000 Pro One Sawtooth Monosynth With Sub Oscillator
Amp decay will not alter decay of the oscillators but will alter white noise decay (this will allow an infinite sustain of the sound if needed)

P001 Pro One Sawtooth Monosynth With Sub Oscillator & Keyed Portamento
Amp decay will not alter decay of the oscillators but will alter white noise decay (this will allow an infinite sustain of the sound if needed) - Portamento is set to Finger Glide

P002 Pro One Sawtooth Polysynth With Sub Oscillator
Amp decay will not alter decay of the oscillators but will alter white noise (this will allow an infinite sustain of the sound if needed)

P003 Pro One Sawtooth Polysynth With 2 Oscillators & Sub Oscillator
Amp decay will alter decay of all oscillators – Detune is effective on this one

P004 Pro One Sawtooth Monosynth With 2 Oscillators & Sub Oscillator & Keyed Portamento
Amp decay will alter decay of all oscillators – Detune is effective on this one - Portamento is set to Finger Glide

P005 Pro One Sawtooth Polysynth With 3 Oscillators & Sub Oscillator
Amp decay will alter decay of all oscillators – Detune is very effective on this one

Info on Detune/Chorus
I Have found the best way to replicate the effect of analogue oscillators wandering is to make sure that the stacked oscillators do not have the same s/start point (otherwise they phase and sound thin)
They also need to wander at different rates and depths so they always sound organic. I have achieved this by setting the oscillator speeds separately and when the depth is increased with controller H they start to take on that lovely thick sound. The thickness can be further increased with the chorus (this wanders too using the LFO set to ITD) nice.

Try using these banks with your own samples to create a library of tweakable synths.
Try using different filter types (bandpass works well)
If you are worried about these sounds hogging your polyphony then you could always internally resample your results and and use your new sounds for basses, leads, pads or whatever.
ENJOY

Will this only work on the E4 line of samplers, and not the 6400 Ultra? Or would the ultra load up the cords for MIDI A through H?

it will work on any ultra. I am not sure whether early EOS have all 12 C/Controllers.
I'm running 4.7 ;)

Finally got a chance to play with this, this morning. Thanks for sharing, was interesting to see how other people are setting up the cords and laying out samples.

Now to start chucking my own samples in to the presets!

Hi Jahfunk,

In my opinion, you've created a little chef d'oeuvre !
Really really good ! First time I see a sound using all continuous controllers and it sounds... Analog ! The natural feeling of tweaking the sound with the buttons is so joyful !
I really appreciated your bank.

I'll try to put some Modular samples to see if I can achieve the Moog sound.

But once again, congratulations !
I can't hardly imagine how long you spent on this one so I would like to thank you for saving me time and allowing to learn more about "cording".

Hope to see more of your work up next !

Hi solito
Glad you like the banks. You might also be interested in the wobble bass patch I posted here some time ago
I added this downloadable file in the topic Here are some banks using midi clocks
You can read about it and download it here ....http://www.emusonacid.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3651

Also mosrob posted a great bank that gives your emu a square wave synth with Pulse Width Modulation (PWM)
this can be manually swept or controlled with an LFO.
This is a stunning synth waveform with great movement that will give you some great starting points for a really analogue sound if combined into my banks
You will find you need to to add control of the PWM After combining into my bank by changing the patching of the controller D slider destination from chorus to PWM control.
Controlling and setting up the PWM is best understood by studying the original mosrob chords and modifying my bank to modulate the important things.
The PWM bank can be found in the topic wanted "sounddesigner's toolbox" bank.
LINK...http://www.emusonacid.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3633&p=15349&hilit=PWM#p15349
The downloadable bank is called "B.001-PWM Thing.ZIP"
Let me know how you get on

Hello JahFunk,

I read the posts you advised me with high concentration (and quite didn't understand a word but I loved that  ) and I discovered a new world ! Really ! I didn't think emu's samplers had that much possibilities !
So I'll change my setup to be able to create new sounds.
I'll also try to get some more theory abous synthesis because there's a lack of knowledge in my emu background.

Thanks a lot again.

One last question that comes in my mind just now : I tried ZOEes ans EOSLink ; ZOeOs development seems to be interrupted and EOSLink is really primitive. What tools would you advise me ? have there been posts dedicated to this topic ?

Hi solito
Don,t worry too much about understanding the text just download the banks and have a play.
I think that as you play with the sounds and alter the cords you will pick it up quicker than reading.

As for programing the ultra, I just do it within the unit, but I do have the advantage of the a ASCII keyboard port on my sampler with a computer keyboard attached, this is great for navigating the menus, and naming samples by typing.
However I can move around the sampler very fast without using the keyboard so if the ASCII option isn,t fitted on your machine don't be put off working with just the buttons and alpha dial.

By the way, if you want to hear what PWM sounds like watch this youtube vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H95VCY8_ZzU and check out how the sound becomes thicker and thinner (PWM)

Hello,

The MIDI clock bank is massive ! Loved it ! Don't even have to tweak it to achieve a creative play. 8-)
didn't study it yet but I will.

By the way, the PWM bank you advised me is not working :
- I downloaded it, changed the extension to e4b then loaded it on a Zip drive. But the Ultra doesn't even see it (whereas it can load all the others banks you made).

I start to understand PWM more clearly now, after reading a few theorical documents. But the real thing would be if we could achieve wavetable synthesis on an emu !
I didn't find lots of infos about PWM on Ultra series. Are there threads on that subject in the board ?

Hi,

Yes I did change the extension : it reacts as if the file was corrupted.
Is this file version still safe on the server ?
