I have just got hold of an E-Synth this weekend. Been messing about with it for a while last night and all seems cool. The only problem is that when I am loading sounds from an original Official Akai S3000 Sound Library cd, the presets seem to be mainly loading in some kind monophonic mode. The string and piano patches I loaded would only play one note at a time. I have an original S1000 cd and this seems to load presets fine. Any ideas? OS is 4.10a
Also...... :-) ...... if I update the OS to the latest 4.7 (or 4.61), will it overwrite my e-synth presets? The only downloads I can find to restore them are for an e-synth ultra and not the classic version I have.
......And.... How do I know if I need Flash Prep or if I already have it installed?
Was really hoping to use this for my Akai stuff.

Hello!

I think it must be possible to save your presets from the synths board.

MASTER->Bank->Flash-> "Flash->Ram"

After copying the E-Synths Presets into the RAM, you can save. I think!

But when it doesn´t work, there is another solution:

As you described there are only the Presets of the Ulra Rom Boards available.

BUT, I think that thes Ultra Presets are exactly the same, but with different names.

Because I had put both, the old E-Synths and the old Orbti/Phatt Boards, in one of my Ultras.

And I hav used the Presets Banks for the Ultras!

It seemed to work. No strange Sounds imho.

I think the problem I might run into is that the available preset disk for the e-synth ultra has 499 presets for the e-synth board and the regular e-synth only has 255 presets so they would appear to be different.

You could be right in the way of 255 and 499 Presets.

But I think that it must be possible for you, to save your presets, who are currently in the flash, as a normal bank.
Like I had described in my last posting.

By the way. I think that E-mu never made "really" new Rom Boards for the Ultra Line.
They only make a lot more presets with each of the two Rom Boards.

I would really like to test it, with an old Rom Board (like I have) and an Ultra Rom Board. Both of them are 16MB Roms.....

Cheers Chris. Will make a few tests this week. An e4K just arrived today so I am trying to get through what is on the hard disk and in the process of getting it to recognise my CD drive.
Bought chicken systems Translator last night. $160 including postage and all it does is crash as soon as my macbook pro tries to read the akai disk when I press translate. Can't get the program to do anything more for me :-(
Been a long week up to now haha. The E4K only has 1meg of cpu and flash ram so I don't think I will be able to upgrade the os any further than it already is (3.00b) ..... On the other hand, it has the stereo effects, 4 gig drive, 128 voice, 128 meg, 32 midi, spdif etc so it was well worth having.
Just want to get on with music now lol.

You can upgrade the Flash fo your e4k!

Find someone who can burn eproms, who can desolder and solder, and who knows which eproms do you need for the upgrade.
( I have the two bin codes for the classic EOS 4.62. Thanks to JeanHQ)

BUT, when it doesn´t worked, you have a faulty e4k.......

So it is your decision.

I think, if someone has two emus, it isn´t so important to have both units with the latest possible EOS.

In my case, I´ve got the two eproms from JEAN HQ (his nickname here the forum).
They were burned.
His real name is Ivan, and he was very, very helpful!!

I had only to managed the desolder/soldering here in germany.

I don´t know if he is still here in the forum. He comes from russia, thinking it was Moscow....

At first, try to contact him.
He can give you further informations, perhaps he can give you eproms too.

But when you couldn´t get in contact with him, please let me know. So I will search for my whole email contact with him, and I will give you all the information I have.

Do you know if it's possible to use the motherboard from an old E4 rack version that has already been upgraded inside the E4K? Was thinking it might be easier to find a rack version and just transplant the main board.

The Rack sampler and the Keyboard motherboard designs are totaly different!

Main reason is the Keyboard circuit! The Boards of the Racks don´t have these circuits and connections!

So really no way to make a "hybrid" version......Sorry!

And please don´t forget, if the upgrade on your e4k fails, the unit will be a total crap!!!

Is this your only emu sampler?

Imho a better solution will be, to buy an e5000 Ultra (or another Ultra). Then you can use the samples from the ultra with your e4k...

I was thinking of just using a rack unit with the updated roms as a donor for the eproms not for the whole mainboard.
I have an esynth rack too. It has been upgraded and is on OS 4.10.

If I translate the word "donor" correctly, this isn´t possible to do.

The EOS in the racks is in ONE Flash ROM simm and the EOS in the e4k is in two eproms!

In the standard e4k each of the two eproms has a size of 512kbyte. So you get the 1MB Flash.

For updating the EOS higher than 3.00b you need more space than 1024kbyte.

At this point you must change the 512kbyte eproms with two 1024kbyte eproms.

I think there is a routine in the e4k that divided the EOS during an update into two parts!

Right. I thought I had read somewhere that the original E4, E64 (and E4k) had to go back to the factory for the upgrade as they all needed the de-soldering and soldering. I assumed that this meant that they all had the same two 512k eproms.
My problem is that I have the Esynth and the E4k in different parts of the studio. The E-synth is in my control room and the E4k is on the corner of my live room. I bought the e4k so I could be in the bigger live room as I prefer to be in there for programming and writing.
A problem I have is that some banks on my esynth that I use are too big to load into the the e4k as it does not have enough preset ram.
I have sent PM's to a couple of people on here about eproms. Hope I can get something sorted out. Waited ages to find a fully loaded e4k in good condition to buy. Might now have to buy another one that has been upgraded already to get round this.

I know that it is very difficult to get an upgraded e4k or a turbomodel!

I know a few guys here form germany who wants to sell her Turbos. But they don´t want to ship it!!

Don´t forget, that im my case, here are two faulty keyboards! An E-synth Dance and an e4k.
Both with the typical deadly motherboard

I want to get a working e4k too, but all the offers who can ship the e4k have only the 1MB Flash Ram......
