How to layer drums without phase issues

Postby JAHFUNK » Wed Feb 12, 2014 1:40 am

Here's an interesting video http://youtu.be/R9m3ga7_sdE
It shows how to avoid frequency cancelation when mixing kick drums.
Useful information! it can be applied to any layered drum sound.
Although the guy is using a DAW to edit, the same principles can be adopted when using the Emu to layer sounds.

didn't watch the video yet but phase issues are a major thing to consider. I always check for phase issues and test to invert the phase of certain sounds to find out whether it's eating up headroom unnecessarily. Unfortunately I yet have to find a way to invert phase in the sampler. Also we should start a drumlayering superthread :)

There's no tool for inverting a sample in EOS. You have to use an external sample editor for this.

In the video the narrator explains the issue of undesired phase cancellation, caused by samples starting with an opposite waveform phase.
His work-around is to modify the start-point of the sample to let all samples begin with a positive phase like a sine waveform at 0°.

He misses to explain that depending on the sample a lot of acoustic transient are at the beginning. This work-around cuts them off.
The work-around works in this case as the acoustic transient are not very strong with an 808 and 909 kick drum.

Yes Rob, it's a shame Emu overlooked this feature, it would have been easy to implement.
I agree with you about the transient spike loss when truncating the s/start, sometimes this really matters, if this is the case use Soundforge or similar.
It might be worth trying to bring the waveforms into phase by delaying one by a millisecond or two if you are in full flow and can't be arsed to sample transfer to a computer to invert the sample and then transfer back.
This might produce some undesirable side effects but it could very well give some happy accidents.

It is possible though to send the samples to different outs and invert phase on your desk (if you have one with a phase switch, my obviously doesn't -.-) or your soundcard. But yeah, I watched the video after my first posting and was wondering why someone would kill the transient...
