I'm guessing that we haven't really run into the limit on the lifespan of these things yet, so nobody really knows how long they'll last.

I'd be most worried about your HD. Older hard drives often came with a 3-year warranty, but the way an Emu uses the HD is a lot less intese than how a computer used the HD, so drive life is probably longer than usual.

Chickensys' Translator would be able to convert your samples to another format, should the worst occur, and your Emu die.

ram is considered to have a life span of up to 35 years, from what i have read in an A+ certification book.

eproms... the cheap ones, 5 to 10 years, and ones with shielding i am guessing would last at least 20 years. as long as ultra violet light doesn't get in.

i am guessing that the emus will last maybe 15 to 20 years. i think you would have to replace the power supply or screen before the board shorts out.

i plan on getting another emu and keeping it in storage. once they get cheap enough. maybe get some ram and put it in as well, since that stuff is kind of hard to find.

yeah, better get one while you can for sure. emu has definitely stopped production, so what' out there is all we'll see. it's actually a great time to buy one, their value is equal to dog shit right now due to the softsampler hype phenomenon. once that tapers off and people can no longer get these, i bet in a few years they'll have more value then than now. i see E4XT Ultra's go for $500-800 on Ebay. they used to retail for $3000!
also, EMU's selling RFX bundled w/ other I/O options, so a great time to get RFX too, not to mention all the CD-ROM's are on sale too.

You can buy translator which will be able to convert your existing samples to other sampling formats. Furthermore you can make a backup of your Emu harddrive on your pc or mac computer.

hey i am sure in 15-20 years computers will have 1000gig processors and there will be samplers so amazing these things will seem like a VIC 20.
So i wouldn't worry about buying a few of these things , just make sure everything is well backed up .

I asssume one of the hotter problems will be the disk. I dunno if you will get a disk that the EMU can read in 5 yrs. Serial ata, blah, blah blah... So I'd just get a harddisk...
