broke down and bought a G5...but can a brutha hook up SCSI?

Postby palamino chuck » Tue Aug 03, 2004 3:29 pm

my brief flirtations with the dark side (aka land of PC's) ended abruptly after i woke up in a cold sweat stricken with anxiety and trepidation the likes of which i had never experienced before. i had just had a vision in which god told me personally "Listen... Don't fuck with those PC's. Man." so I broke down and immediately went online and purchased the cheapest G5. & i was totally surprised to find out that you can actually get refurb single 1.6's for $1299 which is a steal IMHO.

anyhow,
so now that i am back in the good ol' territory of macs, i am curious as hell about the pci/scsi card issue.

i have yet to have seen responses but i'm still going to be attempting to hook up my bird via scsi. if anyone can vouch for certain scsi cards that work w/ g5's then please holla at a brother. otherwise it looks like i'll be the guinea pig that finds out what'll work and what doesn't.

PEACE

Check the apple discussion in the support page. apple.com
I'm sure somebody knows what pci card you need.

btw 1299 is an amazing price for a g5. I thought those were around 3000.

talked to the sales rep @ adaptec and the 29160 & 29160N series both have the correct voltage & specifications for OSX versions all the way up to 10.3.X and homeboy said they were A-OK w/ g5s.

so yeah i'm gonna cop one of these and see how it goes...

I heard the DO work!! Expensive too!!!

However, Id be somewhat cautious of this. Adaptec announced some time ago that they will be dropping OS Xdriver support. Thats means if OSX changes and breaks a driver u will not see an updater from Adaptec. Id be pretty piss'd off if Adaptec never mentioned this to u.

www.attotech.com/ have SCSI card that will work and they have always provided better support for Mac's than Adaptec but fsck those things are un-necessarily expensive for our low bandwidth needs.

If you shop around u should be able to get it much cheeper than that. Mind you everything in the UK seems to be much more expensive :-(
