VST's & Ultra

Postby niles » Sat Feb 11, 2006 4:42 am

I've been sucked into the great vst world that I'm sure most of you have but! I have been really getting down to business with it all latley. Comparing quality of any said vst quasisampler/quasirompler versus hardware sampler is not an easy thing. So I came really close to letting my E4XT Ultra go recenttly. Someone on this forum who was acually interested in buying it talked me out of selling it. Amazing unselfishness I must say! In need of cash I talked myself into the FACT that vst's are just as good if not better than my beloved Emu. Well, after really listening, to me anyways, all the vst's, including Atmosphere, Kontakt, Trilogy and a bunch of others, really sounded rather 2 dimensional compared to the Emu ( I have an RME HDSP 9632 soundcard, which is not the best, but not to bad either). I mean really 2D, and its not subtle. Yea, its hard to beat certain things in Kontakt, what do you guys think though? Of course, why not use both? I do. It gets me thinking though, what if Emu had kept on producing the Ultra line. I'm very glad I didn't sell the Emu. All this aside, it's refreshing to get home, turn on the Emu, and just friggin play. No updates needed :slayer:

I use lots of VST's as well (and an MPC1000, Akai Z4 and Yamaha RS7000), but NOTHING sounds like my E6400 Ultra: I wouldn't sell it for the world.

Couldn't agree more! Thats why I upgraded my ESI4000 to an E6400 Ultra. The lush fullness of the Emu is a thing of beauty, though the Korg Legacy Poly6 is pretty good sounding
Sounds Delicious...

Yes Thats it! That?s why i stay still on Emu.

Sometimes i sampled the Vst Instruments back to Emu.
I made this when the "Korg Legacy VSTi " came out , and my Mac didn`t had enough
Power, ( and i didn?t liked the VSTPlug User Interface from the Polysix and WS ).
So i made " my best of "from Polysix and WS VSTPug in my Emu Ultra.

And ? Better/ Faster Handling , More Realtime Controlling and "better Sound "( shure it?s subjektiv ) ...but i think i am not alone with this experience

Yep. I did the same thing with the Poly6, making presets in the Emu. And with FM7 too (and my old TX81z!)

Sixtysixnorth, yes a million times! I've been really really gettin into this during the last week havin been duped so to speak into the whole vst thing. The more I investigate the more I am amazed at exactly how you describe the Emu. Lush Fullness is the quality that it has. Back and forth a million times and its really so much more alive than the vst's. Now, seems I'm knocking the vst's and acually, I am! I've spent a small fortune on them. Far more than what this secondhand E4XT Ultra cost me. I would venture to say, that aside from the Steinway in Kontakt (My particular favorite in pianos right now)(the updated version that is) that the Emu has far supirior sound quality and that includes the EWQL Gold as far as I'm concerned. Yep, been comparing it to the allmighty EWQL. To me, the Emu wins hands down. Have a good friend that was a violinist in the Boston Symphony and called her over for a compaisum, and even she agreed.
I wouldn't sell it for the world.
wigworld, now that I've got my senses about me, I'm right there with ya. What the hell was I thinkin?

MFP, I have been samplin the vst's back to the Emu also but it's been slow so far. I do like the results at this point though. This will help me get better aquainted with sampling and possibly get me more away from vst's.

om, thats a brash statement, send me an mp3, maybe a little colaboration will make it not suck as bad :spliff:

been using vsts

Postby somsay » Fri Feb 24, 2006 4:58 am

yeah i been getting better at layering my sounds together with kontakt in logic audio to try to acheive a big analogue bassline sound, i come pretty close cause i use good analogue synth samples like on the virus or jupitor or juno, layering a bottom sub, with mid and hi samples together all in different samplers and using good compression and distortion...i think i am gonna be using this as the method to see what samples go together, then gonna try to redo that instrument with my emu ultra 5000...

you dont got control like logic 7 with kontakt, but people get away with it with their tunes today using vsts or audio units.

but that emu sound is still unbeatable...just long man! i guess ill have to develop a faster working method, hopefully that zoes program for mac os x will do it!

cheers!
