Just got a 6400 classic, is it broken or am I retarded?

Any problems with your Ultra sampler should be reported here, hopefully someone might know what's wrong.

Just got a 6400 classic, is it broken or am I retarded?

I just got a 6400 classic off ebay, it runs eos 4.62 and has 128mb RAM but no disk.

To test that it works I recorded in a sample (I don't have any way of loading banks, or any banks to load), which seems to work as I can see the waveform, but it doesn't seem to output any sound.

When I am in sample edit mode, am I right in thinking that it should play if I play a note on my midi keyboard?

Also I created a preset using only this sample, am I right in thinking that I should hear something when I play my keyboard in preset edit mode?

The midi light is flashing so I know the keypress is getting through, but there is nothing coming out of the outputs, or the headphone socket.

Please let me know if I am obviously doing something wrong, because I really don't want to have to send it back.

Many thanks for your help.

Before you start goto master>bank>erase.

Record your sample.

Goto the Multi screen and on Ch 1 set your submix to main.

Press sample edit, the audition button should then let you hear your sample out of the main outputs.

Push sample edit again and that should take you back to the Multi screen , change your submix to Ch 2 and repeat to test all your outputs.

The headphone socket only mirrors what is coming out of your main outs.

If you're not getting any sound then check that the volume control is turned up and that you have your leads are connected correctly.

You are right though you should hear something if you push a key in sample edit mode.

Thanks a lot for your help, I think I have established a few things:

- the test tones work ok through all the outputs

- if I set the submix channel as you said, then when I am in the sample create screen and I play the sample source, then output comes out of the 6400.

So clearly something is working. The problem is I still can't get it to respond to midi notes. The audition button doesn't seem to do anything either, no matter what screen I am in.

Any more ideas?

Further to this, tonights investigation reveals that key trigger sample recording works ok, so clearly the thing is receiving midi, and the scrub wheel works, so it is able to play samples.
It just won't play them when I play the damn keyboard! This really is driving me nuts...

I'm still not totally sure what you mean by that.

I am plugging my keyboard (proteus mps) directly into the 6400 for both midi and audio if that is what you are getting at.

Ah, then you are using your proteus as a midiboard. Check your midichannels, and let me know what you are transmitting and recieving on.

I understand you now.

The 6400 is set to basic channel 1, I am transmitting on channel 1 from the keyboard. I have tried both multi and omni modes.

Well, then I don't know. You might wanna try to import a midi file from a floppy and try to play it.
