Hi All

New to this forum .. so hi to all ..

I loved EMU but never managed to afford one so when an E4X classic came on the market I picked it up. Some questions for you guys:

- The unit does not have an HD in there so the previous owner used to load from a SCSI CDROM drive. Sounds too much hassle to me so I am thinking of fitting in an HD. Does anyone have an idea whats the biggest size the OS will support ?

- Its got EOS 3.0 on it (but will confirm when I physically get the unit - on its way by post). Whats the easiest way to upgrade to the latest EOS ? what benefits would I gain by upgrading ? is it even worth the upgrade ?

Thats my lot for now ... would appreciate ANY help whatsoever ..

By the way, all I am getting with the unit is the internal floopy disk drive, the CDROM drive and the cable to connect the CDROM to the main unit.

I don't know about under EOS v3.0, but under 4.6 the max hard drive size was 18Gb. I haven't heard anything that would lead me to suspect it would be lower under earlier versions.
Of course, you can put in a larger drive... it's just that the EOS will only see 18Gb when it's EOS formatted.

As for upgrading the operating system... Well, you'll need to find out how much CPU RAM there is when you get it. The base classic models didn't have enough RAM to run the 4.0+ versions, but could be upgraded (which many after-market units are). If you have enough (erm... I think it needs 2MB), you can upgrade to EOS 4.62 and get a lot more functions and some more filter algorithms. Yes, it is worth upgrading. If you don't have enough RAM, you might be able to find somebody here or on eBay that would sell some.

I too had a long-time love of E-mu but couldn't afford any, until getting a much better job last year and then discovering eBay (It's addictive! I've bought three other pieces of E-mu gear in the last 8 months! When will the madness end?!)

Well, I got the baby (yes, MY baby ) today and it looks cool. The specs as follows:

- EOS 3.0 (Ouch !)
- 128MB RAM (upgraded by previous owner)
- 540MB IBM SCSI HD
- External SCSI CDROM Drive (previous owner used it to load new sounds onto the HD). Not sure if its a CD-Writer ? How can I tell if it is a Writer or not ? Does it MATTER if its a writer (you know, so I could use it to backup the sounds, maybe ?)

Now, MORE questions for you EMU fans out there :

- What is the best and error/surprise free method of updating from EOS 3 to the latest (is 4.62 the latest for the E4X Classic) ?

- The HD interface is a 50-PIN one, are there any SCSI 18GB beasts out there that uses a 50-PIN interface ? I might be able to get a 9.1GB but never heard of an 18GB with 50 PINS ? If I am to use a 50 to 80 PIN adapter, do these things work with the EMU ? has anyone out there tried /heard about this kind of setup before ?

- The manual that came with it had a brouchure about the EMU sound CD collection (about 20 I think) with all sorts of sounds. How would I be able to get my hands on some of these ? anybody you know off that might be selling this collection ?

- Finally, where do people get new sounds/samples from ie. free ones, forums like this but for sounds, sample web sites ...etc.
