Hey eveyone.

I ended up with the decidedly low tech storage solution of a external SCSI HD with zip drives on the Mac Pro & EMU end for getting files to and from the computer.

A quick side question, is upgrading EOS possible thru ZIP disc transfer or am I limited to floppy?

Does anyone have any ideas where and IDE dock/caddy can be found? The ICY Dock one is discontinued, and I'm not having much luck finding any other ones.

any help would be appreciated.

Still seems to be available on the IcyDock website and several ebay resellers:

Double check you get one that is NOT SATA, and can support an IDE internal 2.5" drive (PATA IDE) and has an external USB AND IDE interface and not just USB.

Are the "AR" models the entire kit? I thought they were just the drive enclosures, and not the docking piece.

I don't mind the lack of USB for this. If needed I'd go with two units -- never know when an extra drive will come in handy anyway.

Is the AR just the caddy an the MR the full kit? I've been wondering about that, but I can't find a definite answer.

Do you know if the drive, once removed from the internal bay, would be USB-powered by the computer? Or does that depend solely on the drive model and not on the Icydock bay?

will actually depend on your PC./Mac and the drives current requirements- if the USB port can source enough current it may work off one port, otherwise you need one of the double USB adapters to allow the drive to be powered from the PC/Mac.

The MR is the one that you can use the caddy with USB the AR you can't.

You need to look at the External Usage Host, on the AR is doesn't have one so you can't use the caddy with anything else apart from another dock. The MR does it has USB as the external usage host which is what we want.

Sounds like I can go with either model as I plan on slapping one in my E4XT, 6400 and PC. I figure since I'm going with two already, I might as well put one in the PC to complete it all :)

I live in Toronto, Ontario. I had to get a friend in the US to order them for me from those places.

Has anybody found nny sources for the Icy Dock MB448MR-B that will ship to Europe? I have only seen it online in Central Computers, but they do not ship outside of the US.

The SATA-IDE options may not be a dead end. I've been doing more research on this and it seems the issues we run into like certain SATA bridges not working are common issues in the PC world, and similar "embedded" systems like DVR's, Video streaming servers etc where IDE is still used.

There's a really interesting thread here for those who want to do more research. I'm going to buy a couple more SATA adapters ($5 each) to see if the ones that work in older Xboxes and the A100 embedded Network Video Player system can work in the Emu.

note in the case of the this A100 device, they had to muck around with cable pinouts as its IDE is a female out of the motherboard - this should not apply to the Emu's.

Seems also to be sensitive to the drive type.

Excellent find..

Kingwin has an excellent USB/SATA dock that can hold two 2.5" disks in one unit that will fit into a floppy size bay. As long as 2 IDE drives can be used by the EMUs. I've never tried.
