I can't believe how long it is taking to get the Icydock stuff sent out .. Haven't been billed yet, which is good.

I got tired of waiting and went a slightly different route ...

I picked up two Kingwin IDE caddys for 3.5" drives, and just slid a ribbon cable and power cable out of one of the expansion slots on the back of the emu, and let the dock sit beside the rack ..

Uhmmm .. Looking on the bright side .. I got to keep the floppy drive :)

Last week I picked up a mobile rack enclosure the same as Aerodrink got back at the start of this thread for quite a cheap price and ordered a bi-directional sata-ide adapter for ?3.50 off ebay. The adapter arrived yesterday, so today I had a go at installing it my ultra to see if I would have any more luck than Aerodrink did. The result is that I am able to see the drive and browse it without it going to sleep, and I can format it, but it is very flaky if I try to read or write the drive. I did manage to backup a few banks the first go, but each time it fails before the end.

So, I can confirm that ide-sata is a dead-end for ultras. Fortunately, I can use the caddy to move files between my various pcs, and it was especially useful for backing up the data from the missus's laptop, so I could finally reformat it for her!

Additionally, I invested in one of the scsi pcmcia card readers that were on ebay uk recently as a backup plan, so I will be putting that in instead when it arrives.

As reported by others - only direct IDE caddies have been successfully used to date.

NOT the e-SATA/SATA/IDE bridge based ones....

Well it was worth a punt ;) The kit didn't cost much, and I do have an alternative use for it, so no problems there.

Absolutely - and its sound like you got the furthest of anyone so far.

I'm still game to get this going - the variability in the SATA-IDE adapters is significant and I'm sure the higher spec ones will eventually work with the right parameters and settings.

Game on!

Navjot,

could you post pictures of how the Emu looks with the caddy inserted and without it ? Also, could you post pictures of the caddy itself, where we can see the interface it has on the back and how to connect it to an USB port?

Thank you!
